Monika Cook (far left) and some of her 13-member team, Ongwanada's Circle of Friends, raised more than $1,600, exceeding their group fundraising goal! On Saturday, February 22, more than a hundred walkers set out from Trinity United Church, taking to the streets of Napanee for the second annual Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) walk. As of walk day they raised nearly $37,000 in support of Morningstar Relief Mission, and donations are still coming in.
“We are so grateful for the outpouring of support for Morningstar from across our community,” said Lynda Carney, one of the lead organizers of the event, “Our goal was $30,000 and, once again, walkers, donors, sponsors and volunteers rallied to help us go above and beyond!”
In 2019 CNOY raised nearly $40,000 that helped the Board invest in the future sustainability of Morningstar by purchasing the building on Water Street. This year, all CNOY funds are ear-marked for much-needed renovations to the kitchen. “Our volunteers serve app. 670 hot meals each month,” says Diane Posterski, Chair, Board of Directors at Morningstar, “Feeding people has always been one of Morningstar’s core priorities. The old kitchen has served us faithfully for many years, but we simply cannot continue to meet the community’s needs, safely, without these urgent improvements to bring the facility up to code.”
Proudly wearing their aprons, Richard Jacques and Larry Wilson—both volunteer cooks at Morningstar—kicked off the event by thanking all of the walkers and volunteers for their efforts and speaking first-hand to the impact this money will have on Morningstar’s capacity to continue to be a source of hope and help to some of Greater Napanee’s most vulnerable citizens.
CNOY is a family-friendly walk-a-thon, national in scope but local in impact. Residents in Napanee were joined by more than 23,000 people, nationwide, and the coast-to-coast effort raised nearly $5.8 million in support of charities that serve hungry, homeless and hurting people in communities across Canada. With many donations and sponsorships still being counted, the event may still reach its $6 Million goal.
